Lumpfish Swim Farther Than Thought, Iceland Adopts Quota System.

A new article in the Journal of Fish Biology – as reported on the web page of the Icelandic Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) – provides new information about the migration patterns of the Lumpfish. The fish migrates over much larger distances than previously thought or over 1000 km distance from their spawning grounds along the coast and their feeding areas in the deep ocean.

The coming lumpfish season is likely to be in a different format this year. The fishing will no longer be controlled by a fishing day system where each registered boat is allocated a certain number of days to fish. Instead a quota system has been implemented with a total of 262 boats allocated a fishing quota. The new season is expected to begin as always middle of March.
