Iceland’s Capelin Roe Stable, Lumpfish Roe Shortage Expected

Heavy snow falls and avalanche risks have interfered with the last days of capelin roe production in the factories one the east coast of Iceland. Still 2023 has been an exceptional season with over 25.000mt of roes produced in total.

This means stable supply to the market for the next 2-3 seasons.

The website Four Dragons offers an interesting overview of 2022 season here.

While the market seems to be covered with capelin roe for a while we are expecting shortages in the supply of lumpfish roes for the caviar production as the TAC (Total Allowable Catch) has been reduced by 37% from past season. Further info here.
