The Icelandic capelin quota of 2022 has been increased as the Norwegian vessels catchin off Iceland‘s coast were unable to finish their allocated quota. The additional 50.000 mt comes at a good time for the capelin roe production. If the weather holds Iceland is predicted to produce in excess of 15.000 mt of capelin roe.
So far about 64% of the total 662.000 total quota for 2022 has been caught. Thereof about 90% have gone into the production of fish meal (acc. to https://www.lodnufrettir.is/ ) The production of whole round capelin has been below market expectations and is seeing rising prices.
