Capelin season 2026 update

The vessel Arni Fridriksson from the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) went out on Monday 5th of January to track the movement and location of the capelin around the Icelandic north-east coast and sample the maturity.

In the second part of January four more vessels will join the survey to determine the overall stock and to confirm the total quota for the 2026 season.
The quota is currently set at 44.000mt but based on previous data the scientists are moderately optimistic that the final quota could end up at around 65.000mt.

How much will be set aside for capelin roe production is still too early to tell.
