An interesting fact noted by Radarinn.is is is that capelin has been the second most valuable fish species for Icelandic fisheries in this century, even though there were four years with no catch at all due to a zero quota. The products from the capelin is frozen whole round male and female, capelin roe and fish meal.
The economic impact of the capelin stock is, however, many times greater than can be seen in the statistics alone, as capelin is one of the main food sources for other important fish stocks. It is therefore indisputable that this small fish is one of the most important stocks off the coast of Iceland.
In this century, capelin products have accounted for about 8% of the total export value of marine products. It was highest in 2002, at just over 16%, and lowest in 2020, when stocks were running low, at about 1%.
